LabCAST

The clinical importance of NAbs in multiple sclerosis therapy has been well documented. In a study entitled "Neutralizing antibodies during treatment of multiple sclerosis with interferon beta-1b: Experience during the first three years,"2 researchers established several key points. They are the following:

  • NAbs develop early, after 6-18 months of treatment
  • NAb positive patients had a significantly higher (p<0.05) relapse rate
  • the number of enlarging mri lesions was significantly greater in nab positive patients in second and third years than it was in nab negative patients
  • mri lesion burden was lower than placebo in nab negative patients and was the same as placebo in nab positive patients

nab activity has been measured in the betaseron® and Avonex® clinical trials. Our next session will review evidence of neutralizing antibody (NAb) responses in the Betaseron and Avonex trials.

End of Session I. Thank you for participating. Please look for an email announcing Session II: Incidence and Biological Significance of NAbs, in two weeks.
