In his study on the incidence and significance of NAbs to IFN-b-1a, Dr. Rudick and colleagues studied two patient groups: participants in the phase III clinical trial of Avonex®(IFN-b-1a) and participants in an open label safety extension study of IFN-b-1b (Betaseron®). A two step assay was used to measure titer levels in these patients and to relate the NAb assay result to the in vivo induction of neopterin.
Reprinted with permission from a slideshow by Dr. Timothy Vartanian.1 Clinical significance was then determined by comparing clinical and MRI measures of disease activity, in NAb+ and NAb- patients. The study also compared the incidence of NAb in multiple sclerosis patients who had used only Avonex with the NAb incidence in those who had used only Betaseron.
