By using neopterin as a marker for interferon biological activity, Rudick et al., determined that patients who had NAb titers greater than 20 had significantly reduced induction of neopterin compared to patients who were antibody negative.

In these patients (with NAb titers > 20):

  • Greater than 90% had persistence of NAb on follow-up testing
  • A statistically significant attenuation of the in vivo biologic response to Avonex was shown

Dr. Timothy Vartanian commented on these findings 1:
"This is highly significant and very strong evidence for a biological marker in patients, saying that neutralizing antibodies are important and demonstrating that theyblock the biological effect of the ligand."
